Along with beginning the Bible study Seamless by Angie Smith …
I have also been reading Psalm 119 – the longest chapter in the Bible.
To be honest, I have kinda avoided Psalm 119 for a long time because it is just so long and it seemed a little overwhelming.
But it really is a great chapter to read along with the Seamless Bible study; as I have dug deeper into this chapter, I have greatly enjoyed it and I am learning so much.
Psalm 119 is all about God’s Word (also referred to as law, statutes, precepts, decrees, and commands) and the character of God.
Psalm 119 tells us that God’s Word is righteous, wonderful, a counselor, good, and that His Word is full of promise. (And that’s just within the first 40 verses)
In the introductory video for Seamless, Angie Smith asks participants to be “praying like a madwoman for supernatural understanding and joy for God’s Word.”
I wanted to share with you how I have prayed this prayer by using God’s Word from Psalm 119.
The following excerpts are from (only!) the first 40 verses of this chapter – as you can see it is full of good stuff ….
Seek Him with all their heart (v2)
I will praise you with an upright heart (v7)
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word (v9)
I seek you with all my heart (v10)
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you (v11)
I will not neglect your word (v16)
Do good to your servant, and I will live;
I will obey your word (v17)
Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law. (v18)
My soul is consumed with longing (v20)
Remove from me scorn and contempt (v22)
Preserve my life according to your word (v25)
Teach me your decrees (v 26)
Let me understand the teaching of your precepts;
then I will meditate on your wonders (v27)
Strengthen me according to your word (v28)
Keep me from deceitful ways (v29)
I have chosen the way of truth;
I have set my heart on your laws. (v30)
I run in the path of your commands,
for you have set my heart free. (v32)
Teach me, O Lord, to follow (v 33)
Give me understanding, and I will keep your law
and obey it with all my heart. (v34)
Direct me in the path of your commands (v 35)
Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain. (v36)
Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word. (v37)
So how do you pray Scripture? This is one way that I have prayed Scripture.
You’ll see I have also included a few other verses as the Holy Spirit brought them to mind.
I hope this will be an encouragement to you to dig into God’s word like a madwoman. And to begin to allow the Holy Spirit to craft within you your own prayers through God’s Word.
Please help me to seek you with all my heart. Please help me to acknowledge you in all my ways (Proverbs 3:6) so that you may direct my path. Please help me to not only acknowledge your direction over my life but to also live my life in praise of you with an upright heart. Please help me to keep my way pure, by following The Way (John 14:6) and by living according to your word.
God, I know that you promise that I will find you when I seek you with all my heart (Jeremiah 29:13) Please help me to understand your word in my heart, to hide it away in my heart so that I might not sin against you or your word.
God, please help me to never neglect your word. Please open my eyes and open my heart so that I may always see it for the gift that it is. Please reveal to me the life, the love, the promises that you are eager to reveal to me within your word.
God I pray that you would consume my soul with a supernatural longing for your word. I pray that you would give me a hunger and a thirst that can only be satisfied through your word. (John 4:13,14)
God, I pray that you would remove from me all scorn and contempt. Please remove from my heart all sense of self – all sense of what I think, what I believe – so that I may fully focus on and obey what you say.
God, I thank you for the spiritual life you gave me when you raised me to life in Christ Jesus. Please preserve this new life you have given me according to your word. (Romans 6:4)
God, I ask in Jesus name, because I know that whatever I ask in His name will be done for Your glory (John 14:13), I ask that you teach me your decrees, and help me to understand your teaching so that I may meditate on and be strengthened according to your word.
God, I thank you that you have given me the choice to walk in the way of truth and I thank you for your promise that if I will set my heart on your laws and run in the path of your command you will set my heart free.
Please turn my heart toward your statutes and my eyes away from worthless things.
Please preserve my life, this new spiritual life that you have so freely given to me, according to your word.
In Jesus precious name I pray,
